I think we can create a Tɛmplet:Welcome template to introduce new users to the Dagbani Wikipedia. You can post a proposed message below. Sabon Harshe (Yɛltɔɣa) 12:49, 6 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]

Okay, Sounds good. We also want to put a similar welcome message on the home page. Maybe we could link from the Tɛmplet:Welcome?Shahadusadik (Yɛltɔɣa) 11:41, 10 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]

Welcome to the Dagbani Wikipedia, officially launched on June 30, 2021! At the Dagbani Wikipedia, we are an open, friendly, inclusive, and welcoming educational online community. Here, not only the Dagomba people but also anyone from around the world interested in African cultures and languages can share their knowledge with the world and write their own narratives.

Here are some of the new categories and their respective articles that I have started. I have tried my best to link them to the correct Wikidata items. They don't have any text yet, just infoboxes, pictures, and links via Wikidata (more at meta:Filling red links with Wikidata). We will need editors to add text and content to the articles, so that we can have a nice-looking encyclopedia instead of just a picture dictionary (which is a good start though).

You can expand the articles and add Dagbani content to them. I am more familiar with languages in Nigeria, and am not a fluent speaker or writer of Dagbani, so I would gladly appreciate Dagbani translation help from time to time.

Be sure to use dictionaries such as Tony Naden's Dagbani dictionary (2014) to check for spelling and usage. If the entries in Naden (2014) are incorrect, you can make a note of it and put the correct one on Wikipedia instead.

Naden, Tony. 2014. Dagbani dictionary. Webonary.

Knut Olawsky's Dagbani grammar book and Roger Blench's lists of Dagbani plant and animal names are also very useful.

If you want to start new articles, be sure to:

  1. Add {{Databox}} on top
  2. Link the Dagbani article to other Wikipedia language editions
  3. Add categories (pubu)
  4. Add references (kundivihira)

Currently, a few of the Dagbani Wikipedia's most active editors are:

And thanks to everyone's hard work linking articles on African-language wikis to Wikidata, the Dagbani and Hausa Wikipedias were mentioned in this Wikimania 2021 presentation about Wikidata. Sabon Harshe (Yɛltɔɣa) 04:42, 21 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]

Request for Endorsements

[mali mi di yibu sheena n-niŋ]

Dear all, we wish to share our proposed rapid grant for the Gurenɛ Wikimedia Community project. Please feel free to endorse and share. Thanks Uprising Man (Yɛltɔɣa)

I would be very interested in helping to get the Gurenɛ (Frafra) Wikipedia started. Sabon Harshe (Yɛltɔɣa) 20:28, 24 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]
Wow that's great. It's still in the incubator. Dnshitobu (Yɛltɔɣa) 21:32, 24 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]

Wikidata vandalism

[mali mi di yibu sheena n-niŋ]

Watch out for Wikidata vandalism. It is probably good practice to add at least a short definition to each new article or page, not just a databox, so that we can check if anything goes wrong when Wikidata gets vandalized by persistent vandals such as [1] (This vandal keeps adding random unrelated articles to Wikidata items about Disney cartoon characters). Sabon Harshe (Yɛltɔɣa) 07:45, 26 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]

Agreed! Masssly (Yɛltɔɣa) 10:18, 26 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]

New namespace:Salima

[mali mi di yibu sheena n-niŋ]
I came across a number of articles that are actually Salima (traditional stories). Technically, they do not belong in any of the Wikipedia namespaces we already have, but given that stories do play a very prominent role in our culture, I think we should find a way to accommodate them here. Hence, I propose that we create a separate namespace called Salima to host these traditional stories.
Thanks, Ŋun su:Dnshitobu for moving Nolɔɣu mini Ŋɔɣu to Salima:Nolɔɣu mini Ŋɔɣu. When created, that's the form pages in the Salima namespace will take.
If they're no objections, I'll go head and file a phab ticket. cc Sir Amugi as this might interest you too! Taali! -Masssly (Yɛltɔɣa) 13:51, 22 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]

Sir Amugi (Yɛltɔɣa) 18:41, 22 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]

Support. We might also want to add categories for salima. Would songs like Ʒiɛm Yila belong here, in mainspace, or in its own namespace? Sabon Harshe (Yɛltɔɣa) 08:11, 23 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]
@Sabon Harshe, Ʒiɛm Yila would be in article mainspace. About categories for salima, Yes! -Masssly (Yɛltɔɣa) 09:37, 23 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]
This sounds like an interesting thing to do. I think we can even find more online/offline collections of salima from the community and the Dagbani department at Winneba. I support this idea. Shahadusadik (Yɛltɔɣa) 12:35, 23 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]

I support the idea for you Masssly to go ahead and file a phab ticket. Alhassan Mohammed Awal (Yɛltɔɣa) 19:46, 23 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]

Done! Phabricator ticket. -Masssly (Yɛltɔɣa) 10:47, 28 Silimin gɔli August 2021 (GMT)[reply]
