Nkonya Senior High School (often referred to as NKOSEC) is a co-educational senior high school located in the Biakoye District[1] of the Oti Region of Ghana.
Address
[mali mi di yibu sheena n-niŋ]P.O Box 18 Nkonya Oti Region Nkonya Ntumda Ghana
History
[mali mi di yibu sheena n-niŋ]Nkonya Senior High School was established in November 1964 through the efforts of the Chiefs and some prominent individuals. Some of the key figures were Mr. C.C.Y. Onny (Assistant Principal Secretary with the Ministry of Finance), Mr. J. Koranteng Kwame (The District Commissioner for the Buem area), Mr. Anyomi, and Mr. Ofedie, both of the Town Development Committee, among others. The school began with just 20 students – seventeen males and three females. The first Acting Headmaster was Mr. Fabian Kwabena Opoku, a native of Nkonya Ahenkro. A year after its establishment, the school was absorbed as a government-assisted school and provided with a substantive Headmaster, Mr. F.K. Adijidornu.
Initially, the school was housed in rented premises until it was moved to a temporary location in Nkonya Ntsumuru township (between Kadjebi and Ntsumuru). In the 1969/1970 academic year, the school was relocated to its current permanent site between Kadjebi and Ntumda. In its early years, the school faced several challenges, including a lack of teachers, basic amenities like water and electricity, accommodation for both students and teachers, and a shortage of books and syllabi. Despite these hardships, through the hard work of the early students and teachers, with support from the chiefs and committed locals, the school gradually developed and began to flourish. Over the years, Nkonya Senior High School has achieved significant success in various disciplines and has produced many prominent personalities in various fields. After Mr. Adijidornu, the first headmaster, the school was led by Mr. Boateng, followed by Mr. Ayitey, Mr. E.K. Addae, and Mr. Gustav Kwame Akroa.[2] After the tenure of Mr. Gustav Akora, Mrs. Irene Sarfo took over and handed over to Mr. Paaku. The current headmaster of the school is Mr. Moses Kwabena Ansah.
Developments
[mali mi di yibu sheena n-niŋ]Although the school has faced some challenges in its developmental efforts, some old students have made attempts to donate to the school. A private legal practitioner Richard Kojo Acheampong and his wife, Joana Asare Acheampong, have funded and overseen the completion of essential facilities at their alma mater, Nkonya Senior High School in the Oti Region. The couple donated a state-of-the-art 12-seater modern washroom facility and renovated a 10-cubicle modern bathhouse for the girls' dormitory, which valued at over $30,000.[3] Similarly, Coach Josef E. Sarpong, an old student of the school in 2021 presented 100 desks and chairs to the school. The donation forms part of some 800 desks and chairs planned to be donated by the old students.[4]
Anniversary
[mali mi di yibu sheena n-niŋ]Nkonya Secondary School (NKOSEC) launched its 60th anniversary celebration in the year 2024 with a call on government to invest in the school’s facilities. The official celebration began in November 16 in the year 2024 and was climaxed on November 17, 2024. The celebration was hinged on the theme: ‘Fulfilling the Aspirations of The Founding Fathers’ which acknowledged founding fathers who have been a strong pillar in building and providing equipment for the school’s development.[5]
