Title
English: Fragment of a Head
Buɣisibu
This terracotta head shows that Yoruba sculpture was highly developed a thousand years ago. The art of Ife interprets the human figure with extraordinary naturalism. This head represents the oni, or king of Ife. The exact purpose of the striations on the face is unknown—though they serve to emphasize the delicate modeling of the features.
