English: Shire Hall and war memorial Looking north-east across St Peters Square. The Shire Hall was designed by Sir Robert Smirke and built in 1818. The eight Doric columns at the front are based on the Temple of Theseus in Athens. The building is the home of the Crown Court and is also used for concerts. In front of the Shire Hall is a bronze statue of Sir George Cornewall-Lewis, the Liberal MP for Herefordshire. He was Chancellor of Exchequer (1855-58), Home Secretary (1859-61) and Secretary of War (1861-63). In the centre of the square is the imposing war memorial.
