English: Newhouse near Redlynch This beautiful Grade I Listed Jacobean country house was built circa 1619 for Sir Edward Gorges, possibly as a hunting lodge. The original house consisted of the central portion only, with two outer wings added in the mid-C18. A servants quarters were added to the rear in 1879, but was demolished in 1972 full of dry rot. The Eyre family were the owners from 1633, and the Eyre-Matchams and their descendants since 1817, when Harriet Eyre of Newhouse married George Matcham. This union established a family connection to Admiral Lord Nelson, as George Matcham's mother was Nelson's younger sister. The marriage also brought about the name change to Eyre-Matcham, and it is their descendants who are the present owners.
