English: Lamu Fort Library was initiated in 1986 as a reference section to serve the Museum staff and researchers who visit the museum. The Museum found the need to extend the service to the community as there was no existing library in Lamu. The Library now serves as a community library.

The library is owned by the national museums of Kenya Lamu Museum under the management of Khadija Issa Twahir as the head of the library department. The Library is divided into sections such as the Resource Section, Archive Section, Children's' Section and Maktaba ya Sanaa Section and Study Room. It has about 3000 members, with a large percentage covered by students who are the most active and permanent members of the library. Other visitors are researchers and library personnel.

Part of the library activities includes Reading Clubs Activity, Online Programs and Public Programs. The library also has temporary members that visit during the holiday season. These are students who utilise the library for reading and doing their assignments.

The library uses dual decimal classification as a classification system. It has collections of about 50,000 books, which range in different categories such as research collections, children collections, digital collections and archival collections.
