English: Houses of The Close: no. 65, The King's House This is essentially a C13/C14 building that was altered in the C16 and C17. English Heritage are rather scathing about the modern additions, which in their opinion has destroyed the character of the front.
Nevertheless, it is still a fine Grade I Listed building, that currently houses the acclaimed Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum. Its past history records that it was once the residence of the Abbot of Sherborne, and after the Reformation, of Sir Thomas Sadler, who hosted a visit of King James I, after whom the house was then named. In more recent times the Diocesan Training College for Schoolmistresses was established here in 1849, later becoming the College of Sarum St Michael. |
